PETOSKEY, Mich. (AP) - A 59-year-old northern Michigan man has been charged with assisting a woman who pleaded guilty to murder in her husband’s death.

John Ernst of Levering was arraigned Monday on seven charges in Petoskey’s 90th District Court. One count is being an accessory after a felony and six are perjury related to false information authorities say Ernst provided during a hearing.

Emmet County investigators say he helped Carol Kopenkoskey get rid of the gun used in Lyle Kopenkoskey’s October 2012 slaying. She pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and agreed to cooperate in the investigation. She’s scheduled to be sentenced Feb. 25.

Defense attorney Joseph Kwiatkowski says Ernst turned himself in to authorities once he was aware of the charges and they will “fully defend” them. Kwiatkowski adds he questions Kopenkoskey’s reliability.
