DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Police say a starving dog ate parts of another dog that shared a small doghouse in Des Moines.

The Des Moines Register says (https://dmreg.co/1fDIHgr ) that an animal control officer called to a home last month found an underweight male dog that had some head scarring. Inside the doghouse was the frozen carcass of a female dog, Pebbles, with a hole in her stomach. She was missing most of her internal organs. The owner told police that if the male attacked Pebbles, the attack likely occurred Jan. 20. The man says his son found Pebbles dead when he went to feed the two.

A necropsy couldn’t determine the exact cause of Pebbles’ death.

The animals’ owner has been given several citations, including two for animal neglect.
