PHOENIX (AP) - An Arizona man convicted of killing his ex-wife will try to overturn his conviction for first-degree murder and the sentence he received.

Steven DeMocker recently began serving a life sentence for the 2008 death of Carol Kennedy.

An attorney for the 60-year-old DeMocker filed a notice of appeal Monday. DeMocker has maintained he is innocent.

Prosecutors in Yavapai County landed a conviction by relying heavily on circumstantial evidence. They argued that DeMocker’s motive was to avoid alimony payments and cash in on Kennedy’s life insurance policy.

The supposed murder weapon never was found.

DeMocker also is challenging convictions and sentences on six other charges in the case.
