LA MARQUE, Texas (AP) - Police say a 73-year-old woman held her husband hostage at home and kept tactical-unit officers at bay for six hours before finally surrendering.

The incident happened Wednesday in the Galveston suburb of La Marque, about 35 miles southwest of Houston.

Police Lt. Kirk Jackson said a woman was reported holding her husband at home against his will shortly before 10 a.m. Police Sgt. Shawn Spruill said when officers reached her by phone, she hung up on them. Police surrounded the house and evacuated neighboring houses. About three hours later, a Texas City police tactical squad was summoned.

Finally, a family attorney was able to talk the woman into surrendering. She was taken to a hospital for a mental evaluation.

It was unclear if a weapon was involved.
