DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) - Taylor Phinney of the United States won the opening time trial of the inaugural Dubai Tour, a four-stage race organized by the same group that puts on the Giro d’Italia.
Phinney completed the 6.1-mile race through the streets of Dubai on Wednesday in 12 minutes, 3 seconds. Michael Cummings, his BMC Racing teammate, was 14 seconds back in second and Lasse Norman Hansen of Garmin-Sharp was another two seconds back in third.
World time trial champion Tony Martin of Omega Pharma-Quickstep was fourth and former world champion Fabian Cancellara of Trek Factory Racing was fifth.
Stage 2 on Thursday is a 76-mile ride from Dubai to Palm Jumeirah, an artificial archipelago that fans out like a palm tree into the Persian Gulf. The tour ends Saturday in Dubai.
