ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) - A woman was shot and killed in her home Thursday and another woman was injured after a man knocked on the door and fired a gun at them.

At a news conference, Alexandria Police Chief Earl Cook said Ruthanne Lodato, 59, a music teacher, was shot around 11:30 a.m. in a residential section of the city. She died after being taken to a hospital.

A second woman, a caregiver in the home, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Cook said police are searching for a balding white male with a full gray beard. He said they have no indication that the victims knew their attacker.

Six nearby schools were briefly placed on lockdown after the shooting.

At the press conference, Cook was asked about any similarities to the unsolved slaying of Ronald Kirby, 69, a well-known transportation planner with the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments, who was found shot to death in his home back in November. Kirby and Lodato’s homes are a little more than a mile apart.

Cook said that “obviously, that occurred to us” but cautioned that the investigation into Thursday’s shooting is just beginning and “we will have to look to see if we are dealing with a similar homicide.”
