HAWKS, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say they’ve seized 38 dogs and two chickens from a northern Michigan home following a complaint about possible animal neglect.

The Cheboygan Daily Tribune and The Alpena News report Presque Isle County deputies made the seizure Jan. 30 in the community of Hawks, about 100 miles northeast of Traverse City.

Cheboygan County Humane Society Director Mary Talaske and Alpena veterinarian Laurie Jackowiak assisted in the effort. They found the dogs in an unheated indoor kennel with no apparent food and frozen water. There was a space heater, but it had no fuel.

Officials also found nine dead puppies and a dead adult dog.

Prosecutor Richard Steiger says the sheriff’s department is investigating. The Cheboygan County Humane Society is caring for some of the surviving dogs.
