HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - A lettuce grower singled out for praise in Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s State of the State address says the governor has been a friend to the state’s agricultural industry.

Malloy began his speech Thursday with the story of Steve Weinstein, saying he became part of the state’s economic recovery by rebuilding after a blizzard last February knocked out four of his five greenhouses. His farm in East Hartford recovered with help from an $80,000 grant.

Weinstein said Malloy visited in December and it was clear the governor knew a lot about growing, or at least somebody told him the right questions to ask.

Weinstein said he voted for Malloy in 2010 and, given his help with the agriculture industry, he’s inclined to do so again if Malloy runs this year.
