EAST MEADOW, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities are searching for a suspect who slashed a correction officer in the neck as he guarded a prisoner at a Long Island hospital.

They say the Wednesday morning incident prompted a lockdown of Nassau University Medical Center as police searched the building for the suspect.

Newsday (https://bit.ly/LB8avn ) says the East Meadow hospital reopened by midafternoon but security remained tight as the manhunt continued inside and outside.

Police say the suspect approached the officer from behind around 10:50 a.m. as he sat outside the prisoner’s ninth-floor room.

The hospital treats inmates from Nassau County jail. It wasn’t clear why the prisoner was there.

Police do not believe that the prisoner knew the officer’s attacker.

The victim was treated and released.

The hospital referred all questions to the police.
