NEW YORK (AP) - Con Edison is asking large customers in midtown Manhattan to reduce power while crews repair electrical cables.

The affected areas include Times Square and the Theater District.

Con Ed tells CBS New York (https://cbsloc.al/1c7LZnj ) that road salt, melting snow and ice can get into the underground electrical system. That can lead to burned-out cables and manhole fires.

The utility asked the midtown customers Thursday to reduce power to help take pressure off the remaining cables while repairs were being made.

On Wednesday night, Con Ed asked about 7,000 customers in parts of Harlem to refrain from using non-essential electrical appliances. Those problems also were caused by road salt.
