TICONDEROGA, N.Y. (AP) - Police say a pickup truck driver has been critically hurt when his vehicle was struck by a northbound Amtrak train in northern New York.

Police in Ticonderoga tell the Glens Falls Post-Star (https://bit.ly/1fSR5rI ) the accident happened at a crossing near International Paper’s mill around 3 p.m. Wednesday, and the driver works for the paper company. His name wasn’t immediately released.

Sgt. Michael LaVallie tells the paper the man had serious head and back injuries and was taken to Fletcher Allen Health Care.

Amtrak passengers were offloaded to buses.

LaVallie says poor visibility from heavy snow apparently played a part in the driver’s decision to cross while the train was approaching.
