LOS ANGELES (AP) - A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy was sentenced to a year in jail and five years’ probation for battering and threatening his former girlfriend.
Riverside County prosecutors, who had asked for a longer stint in state prison, said in a statement that 44-year-old Mark Hibner received the sentence on Friday.
In October, a jury found Hibner guilty of corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant criminal threats.
Prosecutors said Hibner got into an argument with his ex-girlfriend after she discovered a “sexually suggestive voicemail from another woman” on his cellphone on Christmas Day, 2012.
They say he grabbed the victim’s hair, threw a lighted cigarette at her, punched her in the chest and threatened to kill her.
Hibner, a 22-year veteran of the LA County Sheriff’s Department, was fired.
