MESKWAKI SETTLEMENT, Iowa (AP) - A man has been charged with killing his parents at their home on the Meskwaki Settlement in central Iowa, authorities said, and a bloody machete was found at the scene.

Gordon Lasley Jr., 25, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Gordon Lasley Sr. and Kim Lasley, The Des Moines Register reported (https://dmreg.co/1ngfNU1 ). He appeared before a magistrate judge Thursday and is being held on $2 million bond. Court records do not list the name of an attorney.

The Lasleys’ bodies were found in their home late Wednesday night by another son, Tyler Lasley, according to a criminal complaint. Tyler Lasley said he found his mother’s body on the basement floor and his father’s body on the living room floor. A bloody machete was found on the couch.

The couple’s wounds appear to be from an “edged weapon,” wrote Meskwaki Nation police detective Craig Karr in the criminal complaint.

A Tama County sheriff’s deputy found Gordon Lasley Jr. driving his mother’s vehicle early Thursday, according to the complaint. It said there was blood on his clothes and in the car, and he had cuts on his hands.

The criminal complaint also says he told several family members that he killed his parents.

The newspaper reported the couple and Gordon Lasley Jr. are a part of the Sac and Fox Tribe of the Mississippi in Iowa. It has nearly 1,400 tribal members, according to the group’s website. They own the Meskwaki Settlement land.

“The Sac and Fox Tribe is a very close-knit community, and we are all shocked and saddened by this,” tribal chairwoman Judith Bender in a statement said. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and all of those who are affected by this horrific event.”

Gerald Sanache, who said he is a nephew of Gordon Lasley Sr. and lived next door to the couple, told the newspaper, “They were real good people. It’s a total shock.”

The FBI is investigating the case because they consult on major crimes on Indian land, agency spokeswoman Sandy Breault said. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is also assisting. Meskwaki tribal police are leading the investigation, and other local authorities are involved.

Gordon Lasley Jr. has a record of criminal activity, according to the newspaper. He has faced charges of interference with official acts, trespassing, eluding police, possession of marijuana and multiple driving and motor vehicle violations. His next court hearing is scheduled for Feb. 14.
