GASTONIA, N.C. (AP) - A Gaston County woman is free on bond after authorities accused her of abusing 13 horses on her property.

Police said 26-year-old Molly Cate is charged with 13 counts of failure to provide food and 13 counts of failure to provide proper veterinary care.

Capt. Bill Melton of the Gaston County police said officers found 17 sick horses and two dogs with invalid vaccination records during a December visit. A veterinarian treated the horses that day, but Melton said Cate did not follow recommendations.

Gaston County Assistant Chief J.D. Ramey said the injuries appeared to be from neglect, occurred over time and were not life-threatening. Some horses were said to be severely underweight.

Cate is free on $26,000 bond, It’s not known if she has an attorney.
