GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) - State elections officials have nixed a request to put an early voting site in a University of Florida student union building.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Florida on Friday said the decision by the Florida Department of State to reject the request from the City of Gainesville is intended to make it harder for students to vote in the upcoming 2014 election.

But the Secretary of State’s office spokeswoman Brittany Lesser says the Legislature has restricted where early voting sites can be and lawmakers didn’t include educational facilities.

It is the latest criticism of Gov. Rick Scott’s administration on an early-voting issue.

In 2012, Scott was criticized for declining to use his emergency powers to expand early voting to ease hours-long waits.
