COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) - Workers have finished a $7.5 million railway expansion to help the Army move tanks and other heavy equipment at Fort Benning.

The Army base near the Georgia-Alabama state line marked the completion with an event Thursday.

The Ledger-Enquirer (https://bit.ly/LCx1Pf ) reports the project involved lengthening a railhead at the base by about 4 miles.

The work will make it easier to move M1A1 Abrams tanks, Bradley Fighting Vehicles and other heavy equipment around the fort.

The expansion nearly doubles the railcar capacity of the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division brigade.

Work began in 2012.
