SORRENTO, La. (AP) - Sorrento Police Chief Earl Theriot Jr. has retired.

The Advocate reports (https://bit.ly/1d2CZ7i ) Theriot presented his retirement notice in a letter to the mayor and council Friday morning.

The town has been in turmoil over how to handle its law enforcement services since the police department and its vehicles lost coverage in November 2013.

Theriot and assistant police chief Ricky Smith have been patrolling in the weekday, daytime hours without insurance, while the town pays the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Department to patrol at night and on weekends.

Late last month, authorities opened a criminal investigation into allegations of impropriety raised in a recent lawsuit against Theriot.

The suit claims Theriot supplied an already intoxicated woman with alcohol on Nov. 1 and had her perform oral sex on him in his office.
