APPLE VALLEY, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a teenage girl led four young family members to safety after burning candles caused a house fire in San Bernardino County.

The Daily Press of Victorville reports (https://bit.ly/1iBzCEB) 16-year-old Caitlin Gutierrez said she had just tucked her nieces and nephews, ages 1 to 4, into bed Wednesday when she saw a bright light coming from under a door.

Caitlin says when she opened the door she realized the house in Apple Valley was on fire.

The teen says she grabbed two of the children and led them outside, then ran back inside through thick smoke to retrieve the other two. She says she had to search because the kids were hiding.

Caitlyn’s mother, Delores Gutierrez, who was out running errands when the fire erupted, calls her daughter a hero.

The blaze left the house uninhabitable.
