JACKSON, Tenn. (AP) - Authorities in Jackson are investigating the death of a 17-year-old boy in a fire.

The Jackson Police Department says firefighters were called to a duplex late Friday. Firefighters battled the blaze and brought Tyrone Sterling Jr. out of the duplex.

The teen was taken to a hospital, where he died.

The Madison County Medical Examiner’s Office determined the preliminary cause of death was smoke inhalation. Sterling’s body will be transported to the state medical examiner in Nashville for an autopsy.

The investigation determined the fire was accidental and not suspicious. The exact cause remains under investigation.

Authorities are investigating why the teen was home alone when the fire started. Results of the investigation will be forwarded to the district attorney for review.
