It has been more than a year since my siblings and I betrayed my 100-year-old mother by sentencing her to certain death by depriving her of food and water. This is a harsh but accurate description of how most of us will leave this planet. Despite the media saying how wonderful it was that Terri Schiavo took 13 days to starve to death, I thought of Schiavo as my mother breathed her last breaths of air.

How can a society agonize over executing depraved murderers while casually pulling the feeding tubes from our mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles and grandparents for the “crime” of growing old? Are Eskimos any more inhumane for putting their old people on a piece of ice that drifts into the sea?

I hope seniors reflect on how Obamacare will deem them even more expendable than they are now.
