NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - State officials have fined 26 unlicensed moving companies in the state following a sting orchestrated by the state Consumer Affairs Division.

Officials have fined each company $2,500. In addition, two of the companies face federal fines of $25,000 because officials say they were crossing state borders.

Officials say approximately 290 moving companies are licensed to perform moves within the state.

Eight of the unlicensed movers had listings on Craigslist. Five had listings on Angie’s List and nine used their own websites. The rest were listed on third-party moving websites.

There were 89 formal consumer complaints filed in the state about moving companies in 2013.
