PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Republican state Sen. Dawson Hodgson has launched his campaign for Rhode Island Attorney General with tough criticism for the incumbent, Democrat Peter Kilmartin.

The North Kingstown lawmaker kicked off his campaign Tuesday.

Hodgson is a former criminal prosecutor in the attorney general’s office. In the Senate he’s called for an independent investigation of the state’s $75 million investment in Curt Schilling’s now-bankrupt video game company.

Hodgson says Kilmartin should have convened a grand jury to investigate the 38 Studios debacle. He also criticized Kilmartin for not doing more to block the release of Alfred Brisette, who left prison last year after serving 13 years of a 35-year sentence.

Kilmartin supported a new law making it harder for murderers to win early release. He has said he plans to seek re-election.
