CHICAGO (AP) - An alleged Chicago gang member has been convicted of first-degree murder in the deaths of a pregnant woman and her 7-year-old daughter.

Authorities say the woman and child died in a blaze Jovan Djurdjlov is accused of setting in 2009 at an apartment building in retaliation against a rival gang.

The Cook County State’s Attorney’s office says the jury found Djurdjlov guilty Tuesday.

During the trial, prosecutors argued Djurdjlov went to the apartment in the city’s Albany Park neighborhood after someone threw a brick through a window of his home. They say he started the fire mistakenly believing those responsible were inside.

Twenty-three-year-old Rosanna Ocampo and her daughter, Itzel Fernandez, were trapped inside their apartment and died of smoke inhalation.
