JOLIET, Ill. (AP) - A Will County jury has convicted a Chicago man of first-degree murder in the slaying of a man who was beaten to death with a lamp and then robbed in 2011.

The Will County State’s Attorney’s office says the jury deliberated 90 minutes before returning a guilty verdict against 25-year-old Rodney Julun on Tuesday.

During the trial, prosecutors contended Julun killed 59-year-old Dwight Jones at his New Lenox Township house shortly after the two had met.

They told jurors that Julun beat Jones and then stole his cellphone, cash and other valuables and returned the next day with two friends to steal more of Jones‘ belongings.

He faces a maximum prison sentence of 60 years when he returns to court for sentencing April 1.
