MADISON, Wis. (AP) - A Madison City Council member says she has majority support from her colleagues to create a buffer zone at the entrances of an abortion clinic and other health care facilities to protect patients and employees from protester harassment.
The proposal from Alderwoman Lisa Subeck comes as the U.S. Supreme Court prepares to consider a challenge to a Massachusetts law that keeps protesters 35 feet from abortion clinic entrances. The state will argue its case before the high court Wednesday.
The State Journal (https://bit.ly/1iU5Tax ) says Subeck’s proposal would ban protesters from being within 8 feet of a person on public property within a 160-foot-protective zone. Abortion opponents Vigil for Life says its volunteers respect the clinic’s private property and parking lot, which already creates a buffer. The Madison Planned Parenthood clinic is one of four abortion providers in Wisconsin.
