PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The Galilee boat ramp in Narragansett is being reconstructed to provide better access and shorten wait times.

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management and The Nature Conservancy said Wednesday that two existing boat ramps will be demolished and a new double-lane ramp with rows of floating docks will be constructed. The work will also include elevating and expanding the fixed pier walkway to provide access to the pier and floats for boaters with disabilities.

Officials say the double-lane system will increase efficiency for users of the busy boat ramp.

The Galilee facility will be closed during the reconstruction project. Work is expected to be finished in the spring.

Boaters are being redirected to the town boat ramp at Marina Park in South Kingstown.
