THIBODAUX, La. (AP) - Pedro Maciel found Sam MacBeath for a layup with 2 seconds to play and Nicholls State escaped with a 66-64 win over Houston Baptist Thursday night.

Luke Doyle hit a 3-pointer with 11:26 to play, giving Nicholls State (7-7, 4-1 Southland Conference) a 52-38 lead. HBU, however, used a 13-1 run over the next 4:35 to trim its deficit to two.

Alex Fountain scored five straight points, giving Houston Baptist (4-13, 1-4) its first lead with just over 6 minutes to play, but the Huskies made just 2 of 6 field goals and committed four turnovers down the stretch.

Rob Lewis hit two free throws with 24 seconds left to pull HBU within 64-62. Cody Joyce’s steal a couple seconds later set up a Tyler Russell layup which tied the game with 13 seconds to go.

MacBeath then made the game-winner.

T.J. Carpenter scored 13 points in the win.
