APACHE, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities say a U.S. Border Patrol agent has fatally shot a man after a struggle over the agent’s gun in southern Arizona.
Cochise County Sheriff’s officials say agents were tracking a group of people believed to be in the country illegally Thursday night near the town of Apache.
They say two people were apprehended without incident, but a third ran away.
The man was later spotted hiding under a mesquite tree and authorities say he began to fight with the agent and tried to take his gun.
Sheriff’s officials say the unidentified man believed to be in his 20s was struck in the upper body and died at the scene.
The body has been taken to the Pima County Medical Examiner’s Office and sheriff’s officials say they’re investigating the shooting.
