LOWELL, Ind. (AP) - Police in northwestern Indiana say a woman and her baby were killed after she lost control of her SUV on a slick highway and slid into the path of a semitrailer.

The Lake County coroner’s office says 37-year-old Stacy Walstra of Hebron and 1-month-old Jace Walstra both suffered fatal blunt force trauma injuries in Thursday’s crash.

The sheriff’s department says icy road conditions on Indiana 2 near the town of Lowell likely caused Walstra’s SUV to fishtail and cross into oncoming traffic. The semi driver wasn’t hurt.

John Bryant tells The Times of Munster (https://bit.ly/1j7mZ4U ) he heard the crash near his farm along the highway and saw a deputy pull the baby from the wreckage. Bryant says he wishes highway crews had treated the highway earlier in the day.
