UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a New York man wanted for desertion from the U.S. Navy was discovered at his home with a loaded semi-automatic pistol.

Police in Nassau County say Roberto Carlo Ayala was arrested Friday morning by officers from the department’s fugitive squad and U.S. marshals. They say the 20-year-old man had a 9mm Beretta pistol and a high capacity magazine.

He was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and high capacity magazine.

Ayala was in custody Friday and attorney information wasn’t available. A woman who answered the phone at Ayala’s Long Island address and said she was his mother said authorities told her she’d learn about the charges at his arraignment.

He’s scheduled to appear Saturday at First District Court in Hempstead.

The Navy didn’t immediately return messages seeking comment.
