BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Police say an elderly man has been killed after the car he was riding in rear-ended a patrol vehicle on Interstate 65 in Birmingham.

Police Sgt. Johnny Williams says a patrol car was traveling northbound on the freeway on Sunday when the officers saw a ladder in the center lane. Williams says one officer sat in the car while it was stopped in the shoulder while the other went to move the ladder from the road.

Authorities say a woman crashed into the back of the patrol car and her 98-year-old passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. The man’s identity hasn’t been released.

Police say the officer who was inside the car and the driver of the vehicle that hit it were taken to UAB Hospital for evaluations.
