LOXLEY, Ala. (AP) - Police near the Alabama coast say officers responding to a domestic violence call shot and killed a man who refused orders to drop a handgun.

Al.com reports (https://bit.ly/1eNdTqU ) the shooting happened early Monday in Loxley, about 20 miles east of Mobile. Police say officers dispatched on a report of domestic violence saw a man and woman struggling over a handgun. Police say the man failed to heed commands to let go of the weapon and the officers shot him.

The man died from his injuries. His name was not immediately released. Police say the woman suffered a gunshot wound to the hand, which they believe occurred during her struggle with the man.

The officers were not harmed. Authorities say they have been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.
