FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - People who live or work in the 270 area code region of Kentucky soon must use 10 digits to make local calls.

The Kentucky Public Service Commission says mandatory 10-digit dialing in that area for local calls starts Feb. 1 when area code 364 is added to the same part of the state.

PSC Commission Chairman David Armstrong says seven-digit local calling will end in that area as of Feb. 1 so automatic dialing in telecommunications devices must be updated by then.

Armstrong says current telephone numbers won’t change on that date, but dialing 10 digits for local calls will be required. Dialing 1 for local calls won’t be necessary, and local calls won’t become long-distance.

The first numbers using area code 364 may be assigned beginning March 3.
