WESTWEGO, La. (AP) - An Alexandria-based asphalt manufacturer and paving contractor is moving into the New Orleans market.

New Orleans CityBusiness reported (https://bit.ly/1lWajjI) that Diamond B Construction recently purchased property next to the Mississippi River in Westwego for $2.5 million.

The company plans the site as its first production plant in the New Orleans area.

Diamond B primarily is a contractor for the Louisiana Department of Transportation. It has seven locations around Louisiana that prepare asphalt products and serve as bases for its road crews.

Reldon Owens, the company’s director of sales and marketing, said the amount of work available in the New Orleans market and the significant investment and growth the area has seen since Hurricane Katrina prompted the company to expand.

The Westwego plant will be the first Diamond B facility that handles only production of asphalt products.

Owens said the company will spend up to $7 million to build the plant and will to hire five to seven employees to staff it.

He said work on the site, which Kass Construction previously operated, is in the engineering stage and construction should be completed by this summer.

Diamond B has manufacturing plants in Alexandria, Amite, Bogalusa, Leesville, Mermentau, Monroe and New Iberia.
