LACONA, N.Y. (AP) - State police say a 55-year-old man has died after being struck by a freight train while trying to free his snowmobile from the tracks.

Troopers say Bernard Joss of Lacona in Oswego County was riding his snowmobile on train tracks around 11 p.m. Sunday near his home, 40 miles north of Syracuse. The sled got stuck and Joss kept trying to free it even as a CSX freight train approached and sounded its air horn for an extended period.

Troopers say the conductor saw the snowmobiler from a long way away and applied the emergency brake but was unable to stop in time.

Joss was pronounced dead at the scene.
