NEW YORK (AP) - GE Healthcare said Tuesday that it will buy API Healthcare, which makes software for hospitals and health care staffing agencies.

The General Electric Co. unit did not disclose terms of the deal, but said it expects to complete the acquisition during the first quarter.

API Healthcare is based in Hartford, Wis. More than 1,600 hospitals and staffing agencies use API software for tasks like staffing, scheduling, patient classification, payroll, and business analytics, the companies said.

Shares of GE lost 36 cents, or 1.3 percent, to $26.22 in afternoon trading.
