SMYRNA, Del. (AP) - Corrections officials say a man convicted of fatally shooting another man over a $10 debt has died of an illness in prison.

The Department of Corrections says 63-year-old Charles L. Abney of Clearwater, S.C., died Monday at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center near Smyrna.

The News Journal of Wilmington reports that Abney was convicted in the 1982 shooting of 32-year-old Francis Lambert of Wilmington. Authorities say Abney shot Lambert three times in the torso after they argued over the debt.

Abney was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole.

Abney had been released on parole, but violated the conditions and was returned to prison in 2002 to serve a life sentence.
