COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina Rep. B.R. Skelton says he’s not running for re-election this year.

The Republican from Pickens County announced his retirement from the chamber floor Tuesday, on his 81st birthday.

The retired Clemson University economics professor has served in the House since 2003. He was on Clemson City Council from 1971 to 1974.

Skelton says he thinks it’s time for a fresh face and new ideas.

Skelton fought to keep his seat in 2010. After losing the June GOP primary by 73 votes, Skelton challenged his opponent’s candidacy. His opponent was decertified by the state GOP chairman because he couldn’t produce his paperwork to show he’d correctly filed for office.
