Millions of people follow NBA players on Twitter, but who do the NBA players follow?

The basketball website Hoopshype compiled such a list:

1) NBA (@nba) - followed by 217 players

2) Oklahoma City Thunder’s Kevin Durant (@kdtrey5) - 180

3) Comedian/actor Kevin Hart (@kevinhart4real) - 163

4) Miami Heat’s LeBron James (@kingjames) - 162

Seems like a reasonable top four, even if I don’t personally get the Hart phenomenon. The league and it’s two top players, makes sense.

John Wall ranks fifth.

Apparently 154 players follow @john_wall. That’s more than Shaquille O’Neal (150) or Chris Paul (136) or  Kobe Bryant (127). That’s more than President Barack Obama, who came in 10th with 122 followers, just ahead of rapper Drake and boxing champion Floyd Mayweather.

The Wizards’ point guard is a fairly active tweeter, whether he’s sharing a pic of himself with Jay-Z, retweeting a fan picture or talking about the latest game as he did following Monday’s win over the 76ers. To be fair, the fifth-place status likely  speaks more to Wall’s popularity among his peers than his running a stellar Twitter handle. Or maybe not, what do I know about the Twitter follow habits of NBA players.

Other interesting notes from the list of the top 300 Twitter accounts followed by NBA players:

*D.C.’s own Wale comes in at 19 (109 followers). Jay-Z, ranks 75th.

*Kyrie Irving may be on the verge of landing a starting spot in the All-Star game, but he ranks well behind Wall in Twitter followers, coming in 37th (89)

*The first female on the list? Tulsa Shock guard and former Notre Dame star Skylar Diggins comes in at 53 on the list, followed by Rihanna (69th)

*The only other Wizard among the top 100? Eric Maynor at 92 with 59 NBA followers.
