DETROIT (AP) - A man who pleaded guilty in the hit-and-run death of an 8-year-old boy whose bike was dragged by an SUV in Detroit has been sentenced to prison.

The Wayne County prosecutor’s office says a judge on Wednesday ordered Alfonso Butler of Detroit to serve 14 months to 15 years behind bars.

Authorities say Butler was speeding on Detroit’s west side Sept. 24 when he struck Darrin Wilhite, then kept driving with the boy and the bike pinned underneath.

Authorities say Darrin was dislodged, but Butler drove off with part of the bike stuck to the vehicle’s front end.

Butler surrendered and confessed the next day. His guilty plea was to failure to stop at the scene of a serious accident and being a habitual fourth offender.
