ERIE, Pa. (AP) - A homeless man has been convicted of attempted homicide and other charges for beating a doctor with a paper punch while burglarizing her northwestern Pennsylvania office.

The Erie Times-News (https://bit.ly/KLrXrl ) reports 32-year-old Eddie I. Johnson, will be sentenced March 26.

An Erie County jury convicted him Wednesday in the May 28 attack on Dr. Justine Schober.

Assistant Public Defender Nicole Sloane suggested Schober was beaten in connection with protracted divorce proceedings, though her estranged husband’s brother - an attorney - testified the man was an hour outside Erie when Schober was attacked.

Prosecutors noted a witness who bought Schober’s Kindle tablet reader from Johnson, and that his girlfriend had been told details of the crime that only Johnson would know - including the type of object Johnson used to beat Schober.

Sloane says Johnson “received a fair trial.”
