BOULDER, Colo. (AP) - Police say a couple who were friends of JonBenet Ramsey’s family were never suspects in the 6-year-old girl’s death in 1996 despite some “inaccurate” speculation about them in the past.

Boulder Police Chief Mark Beckner said Thursday that Fleet and Priscilla White were cooperative and helpful during witness interviews and were never under suspicion.

Beckner says he issued the statement at the Whites’ request but didn’t say why they asked. No phone number could be found for them.

In 2008, then-District Attorney Mary Lacy wrote a letter to the Whites saying they weren’t suspects.

JonBenet was found bludgeoned and strangled in her family’s Boulder home. Lurid details of the crime and video of the child in adult makeup and suggestive pageant costumes attracted intense public attention.

Her death remains unsolved.
