DETROIT (AP) - A Detroit-area man charged with murder in the strangulation of his 56-year-old wife has called her “wonderful” at a pretrial hearing in the case.

Robert Bashara made the comment Thursday in Wayne County Circuit Court. He’s charged with first-degree murder in the death of Jane Bashara, who was beaten and strangled at the couple’s Grosse Pointe Park home in January 2012.

Robert Bashara thanked Judge Vonda Evans for recognizing the two-year anniversary of his wife’s death before he was escorted out of the courtroom.

The hearing focused in part on who should represent the defendant in the case.

Bashara repeatedly has denied any role in his wife’s slaying.

Evans set Feb. 18 as the date for the next hearing.
