SUMTER, S.C. (AP) - Investigators say a man waiting outside a Sumter jewelry store to rob it at gunpoint turned the weapon on himself after an employee drew his own pistol.

Police said the man tried to rob two employees of Galloway and Moseley Fine Jewelers as they opened the store around 8 a.m. Thursday.

When one of the employees took out his own gun, authorities say the robbery suspect shot himself in the head after a brief standoff.

No other shots were fired, and no one else was injured.

Police are still investigating the shooting.
