TONAWANDA, N.Y. (AP) - A chunk of concrete dislodged on a busy western New York highway, creating a hole that punctured the tires of about 16 vehicles.

Officials say the incident happened Thursday morning on Interstate 290 north of Buffalo.

The state Department of Transportation says the concrete came out of a bridge joint area, creating what amounted to a pot hole in the road surface.

Police say most of the affected motorists had their flat tires fixed after pulling over, but some with more serious mechanical issues had to be towed.
