LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - A Louisville man has pleaded guilty to killing his former girlfriend and their two sons in exchange for a sentence of life without parole.

Jefferson County commonwealth’s attorney’s office spokesman Leland Hulbert told The Courier-Journal (https://cjky.it/1ekxz3I ) that prosecutors intended to seek the death penalty for John Devine Sr. if the case had gone to trial as scheduled May 9.

Instead Devine pleaded guilty Friday to murdering 26-year-old Sade Goldsmith, 6-year-old John Jr. and 5-year-old Jon’Tee in July 2012 and agreed to a life sentence without the possibility of parole.

In addition to three counts of murder, Devine pleaded guilty to burglary and being a persistent felony offender.

Devine had been convicted of domestic abuse three times involving Goldsmith before the deaths.
