NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - Newport police say a man who was struck by a pickup truck while crossing a street in his wheelchair last week has died.

Police say 56-year-old Robert Silvia of Newport died at a hospital Wednesday. Authorities are now determining whether to file additional charges against the pickup driver.

Silvia was in his wheelchair crossing Memorial Boulevard in a crosswalk at about 7 a.m. on Jan. 17 when he was hit by a truck driven by 31-year-old Matthew McColgan of Middletown.

Police charged McColgan with failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk and driving without insurance. Authorities say it doesn’t appear drugs or alcohol played a role.

McColgan couldn’t be reached Friday. No one answered a phone listing for him. It’s not clear if he has a lawyer.
