PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - A southeast Portland woman says a neighbor fatally shot her terrier mix dog as the dog chased and barked at large rodents called nutria that Priscilla Bush says have overtaken the property.

The neighbor has been arrested and charged with counts including first-degree aggravated animal abuse.

Bush says she was happy to let her 1-year-old dog Marley chase the nutria. However, she says the neighbor apparently feels differently and has been feeding the creatures.

The Oregonian reports (https://is.gd/7WhjZs ) that the woman called 911 after the 14-pound dog limped back to her Thursday and died in her arms.

Police arrested 59-year-old Michael Robert Hutchinson. According to court papers, Hutchinson told police the dog was on his property and he caught Marley chasing a baby nutria into a hole, so he shot the dog.

Hutchinson was arraigned Friday. He’s held in the county jail. It was not known Friday night whether he had a lawyer.
