BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Bitterly cold temperatures were expected to give way to a slow warm-up Friday.

However, the mercury was expected to remain around the freezing mark during the day Friday across much of Alabama, particularly in northern parts of the state.

Temperatures before dawn Friday dipped to 5 in Haleyville; 8 in Huntsville and 11 in Muscle Shoals.

The National Weather Service was forecasting a high of only around 27 degrees Friday in the Huntsville area; around 32 in Birmingham; and 39 in Montgomery.
