GOLDSBORO, N.C. (AP) - Wayne County officials say Sheriff Carey A. Winders has died after suffering a heart attack at his home.

The county website says Winders was taken to the hospital Friday, but could not be revived. Funeral arrangements are pending.

When Winders was elected sheriff in 1994, he was the first Republican to hold the post in Wayne County. The 57-year-old sheriff was last elected in 2010, and the office was to be on this year’s ballot.

Winders started his law enforcement career as a patrol officer with Goldsboro Police in 1984, working his way up to investigations.

Survivors include his wife, Teresa, and three daughters.
